Creating and managing sub domains is a simple task with our control panel system. You can create sub domains to separate your site into smaller sub sites to better keep track of things, and to give a more defined area for your needs.
A sub domain is actually part of your main site when set up through your control panel. An example would be like this;
Say you have a store in your site, and you want to promote some products more then the others. You can create a sub domain called specials.yourdomain.com , or toys.yourdomain.com . Now, these are actually a folder in your main site, but people and search engines will see them as an independent site. It is great to use them to promote sections of your site with sub domains, because the search engines will rank that sub domain separately from your main site.
To create a sub domain, simply log into your control panel at, http://yourdomain.com/cpanel , and click on the icon or link to Sub Domains. From there, you will see a screen with a place to enter your sub domains name. Just enter the name you want, and click the add button.
It is important to make sure when you add a sub domain, you do NOT use more then one word. If you want a sub domain called used cars, for instance,,, you would want the sub domain name to be used-cars, or used_cars or usedcars. Make it connected or many browsers and search engines will never find your pages.
Also, when you create the sub domain like this, you can create an FTP user account for it in the control panel also. After you add the sub domain, you will see the FTP user name listed at the right of the sub domain listed on your create a sub domain page. If you then go to the FTP manager link, you can create an FTP user with the same name as the sub domain page listed to the right of your new sub domain. This is usually not needed, but if you have someone else working on your sub domain site and don't want them to have full access to the rest of your site, or your control panel, then this is a great way to let them work on just that one section of your web site hosting account.
Your new sub domain also has its own cgi-bin. This is useful when you need to set up your cgi programs for your sub domain. However, the pre-configured scripts that are available through the control panel system will not set up in the sub domain usually. This is because most of them are set to go into the top level site in a folder of their own, and will not go into a second level folder. You would need to set up your cgi programs manually for your sub domains.
Sub domain e-mail accounts:
The control panel team is working on developing full e-mail capabilities for the sub domains also. Currently you need to use an e-mail account made from your main domain. Since this would be such a major item, when, and if they complete work on this, we will send out an e-mail notice to let everyone know it is working. It may be quite some time though. Right now, when you go into your control panel to create an e-mail account, you will see the sub domain listed in the drop down menu with your domain name. Using it to make an e-mail address will only fail. It says that it works, and even shows you the new address, but you will not be able to get any e-mail from it. So, until you get notice from us, there is not much point in wasting your time with it.
